Kight Off-Grid lights the way for new Clacton to Jaywick Sands cycle path

A NEW cycling path has opened encouraging residents to be more active following the provision of free bikes through a council programme.

Opened in 2023, the project to upgrade an existing walking route now provides a safer direct route for cyclists. The new 1km route extends NCN150 to Jaywick has a tarmac surface and sports Kight’s fully off-grid lighting solution powered by natural energy from wind and solar powered.

Lee Scott, Essex County Councillor responsible for highways maintenance and sustainable transport, said: “Active Travel is better for the environment, better for people’s health, reduces congestion and avoids creating pollution. Providing access to sustainable forms of transport is a key part of Essex County Council’s ambitions for climate action and our wish to provide people with alternative ways to travel.”

The route starts at Frinton Golf Club, where you pick up Route 150. This traffic-free route takes you down to The Esplanade and continues along the coast all the way to Jaywick. With magnificent sea views, this route is perfect for novice cyclists because the path is flat, wide and traffic-free.

Essex Highways selected Kight off grid lighting as they wanted “state of the art specialist solar and wind powered lanterns which harness the wild nature of the site to power themselves”

Lynda McWilliams, Tendring Councillor responsible for partnerships, added: “It’s been brilliant to see how the scheme has taken off, with community rides and social groups forming, and it is no surprise that the initiative is being extended.”

Lawrence Fagg, Founder of Kight Off-Grid said: We are delighted to be involved with this scheme by installing our green energy lighting solution along the length of the cycle route. This is a sustainable scheme promoting people to cycle instead of using their cars which fits our positive environmental ethos.”
